The Best Year For The Premiership

Published by slayed35440 at 10:56 am under UK Football Edit This

What an absolutely brilliant 37 match days there have been, in the 07/08 season of the Barclay’s English Premier League up to this point. The final decisions on the title and the battle to avoid relegation is going to stretch all the way into the final day, next Sunday. With Chelsea having won against Newcastle on Monday, the pressure is back on last years champions, Manchester United, to perform well in their last showing away to Wigan. Chelsea captain John Terry, after his team beat Newcastle, called for manager Steve Bruce’s Wigan Athletic to pull off a final-day miracle and beat United, effectively giving Chelsea a very favorable chance to overtake the top spot and the title.

The battle for relegation is just as fierce, as Birmingham City, Fulham, Bolton, and Reading all vie for the opportunity to stay in the Premier League. If Bolton can secure a victory or draw at Chelsea on Sunday, the club can escape the drop zone completely. Reading desperately need to win away to Derby County and then need to hope for Fulham to lose or draw away to Portsmouth to avoid being demoted. Conversely if Fulham can achieve the victory on Sunday, because of their superior goal differential, they will just barely escape relegation. Birmingham City would need a victory, and for both Fulham and Reading to lose, for any hope at one more season in the English Premier League.

With all matches on the final day to take place at the same time, 3pm in England, 10am eastern standard time in the States, in a mere two hours after kick-off the fate of the entire premiership will be decided. With so many pivotal battles going into the final day, the biggest decision for any neutral fan will be just which debacle to watch.2008-05-06
